SAFETY TIPS
For Pedestrians
Watch for cars backing up in parking lots and driveways.
For Drivers
You may cross the center line to pass a cyclist if it’s safe.
For Bicyclists
Always ride on the right in the direction of traffic.
LAWS
For Pedestrians
State law requires pedestrians walking along the road to use sidewalks when available.
For Drivers
Pedestrians have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, meaning cars must yield for pedestrians, wherever they are in the crosswalk
For Bicyclists
Bicyclists can ride on sidewalks and in crosswalks but when doing so have the same responsibilities and rights as pedestrians.
When a pedestrian has begun to cross the road during the "walk" signal, they have the right of way over all vehicles, including those turning right on red, until they have fully reached the other side. Pedestrians should always try to use marked crosswalks, but when not at an intersection or marked walkway, pedestrians must yield the right of way to all drivers.

To mitigate that risk, Connecticut has a law stating that drivers and passengers must look before opening car doors into sidewalks or bike lanes to avoid dooring.
